diy taco seasoning

Taco Seasoning (recipe adapted from my Dad)
good for about 1lb. ground beef

Combine spices, about 1-1 1/2 tsp. of each
Cook beef until fully browned on medium-high heat.
Drain the oil.
Place skillet back on stove, add and mix in spice mixture.
Then add about 1/3 – 1/2 cup of water to the beef. You can add a pinch or two of cornstarch (always mix in cold water first!) to help sauce thicken. If not, just wait until water cooks off.

I grew up on Ortega taco seasonings – which by the way, is super delicious – but as soon as I found out that taco seasoning can be easily made with just a few spices, I knew that I wouldn’t buy the store-bought stuff again. It’s easier to adjust the spices to your taste and if you already use and cook with these commonly used spices, it’s cheaper too. Not to mention healthier (no more “caramel color” and maltodextrin, whatever that is).

Taco Tuesdays just got real.

excellent. and coincidentally i made chicken burritos for today. and i always use my own seasonings – that's the most fun of cooking for me! and as you say, healthier and can be adjusted.

I've got to try this, I love tacos and nachos but the store bought seasoning just seems so unhealthy!

OOoo thank you for sharing! This looks fantastic. I'm always experimenting with taco seasoning recipes (mostly dumping cayenne pepper & garlic salt in) but something always tastes a little off and I go running back to the usual packet.

Next time, I'll plan ahead with this recipe!

Oh I need to try this! I made a homemade taco seasoning before but wasn't a big fan of the recipe, so I want to try this one! Do you think it would work if I made a bunch and put in a jar to have on hand?

  11. jillian m. says:

Absolutely! As long as you keep it in an airtight container, I don't see why not. That's a fantastic idea. Saves you some time!

Awesome. The only thing I would suggest is to try it first and make sure you actually like it!

I made tacos with the box seasoning the other day and it was an epic disappointment! Can't wait to try this!

Yum! I think my family always used to whip up a pretty similar seasoning, but I always forget how easy it is to make tacos at home! Definitely going on my menu for next week.
